Every customer runs a different gateway. Your product has to plug into Kong, AWS, Azure, MuleSoft or IBM — and each one is another integration to build, test and keep working.
The gateway cannot do what you need out of the box. Custom authentication, request signing, metering or routing means a plugin or a policy — in Lua, JavaScript or the vendor’s own language.
Rate limits that do not really limit. Limits keyed on one header, no quotas per customer or project, and nothing that stops one client from eating your capacity.
Authentication is checked in some services, not at the edge. JWT validation, API keys and mTLS handled differently in every service — so one forgotten check becomes the way in.
No tests around the gateway. Plugin changes ship on hope, and nobody knows the latency cost until production slows down.
A migration or upgrade keeps slipping. Moving to a new gateway, merging several, or a major-version upgrade feels too risky to start.
